WHY JOIN THE LEAGUE

Founded in 1920, the League of Women Voters is a nonpartisan political organization that encourages the informed and active participation of citizens in government and influences public policy through education and advocacy. The League works at the local, regional, state and national levels, paralleling the levels of government. Members may join through any level of the League.

The organization's name, like its mission, derives from the proud legacy of the women's suffrage movement. Today's members are women and men; anyone aged 18 or older can join.

The League never supports or opposes any political party or candidate. We advocate only on issues that members have studied and come to consensus on. In an era of proliferating and powerful special interests, the League's advocacy in the public interest is increasingly recognized as an essential voice of democracy.

Remember -- even if you have limited time for personal participation, your membership will strengthen the voice of the public in major policy decisions at all levels of government.

We encourage you to find a Local League, if there is one in your community, attend a few meetings, then join if you are still interested. Of course, we hope you will like what you find at our League meetings. If there is no Local League near you, you may become a Member at Large. There is a simple membership form to print, fill out and mail.
