April 1, 2008 - Streamlining the Job of Running League

Barriers:

Single issue focus of some members

Partisan leanings strong

Older: Been there, done that

Newly retired – travel more

Don’t want to use email or don’t check it often

How it used to be done (many members) may differ from how it is done now (fewer members)

Streamlining Work:

Bring someone under your wing - Training in leadership – Mentoring

Staggered terms for officers

Co-Presidents, Co-VP – share the load

Use an administrative team approach

Email Lists: Frequent, Infrequent, Phone Tree

Use Speaker Phone or Conference Call to make it easier to attend Board meetings

Updated bylaws, policies, procedures- timelines built in for what and when things need be done

Need: regional training opportunities from LWVUS

Finding People:

Male members underutilized

Coalitions and events are good opportunities to attract future leaders

Citizenship ceremonies: Register voters, membership brochure

Have an office with staff – utilize non-profit help (Council of Non-Profits in MN) for treasury jobs

Cross-cultural dialogues- such as partner with Latino Groups

Recognize accomplishments of members- appreciate & believe in them
